The village of Socorro united Goans as they
shared their love for Goa and everything Goan at the 5th annual Pattoleanchem
Fest organised by the Socorro Socio-Art and Cultural Association, Porvorim.
The festivities took place at the Socorro Church grounds and saw hundreds of
Goans flocking in to be a part of the festivities, with people coming in from
southern villages such as Chinchinim and Navelim as well. The festival was
special this year as it combined the Independence Day, Pattoleanchem Fest,
World Goa Day, Konkani Day and Ghumtachem Fest. The festivities
concluded with delicious Goenchem Jevonn and vonn as dessert.
Renowned cartoonist Alexyz was present at
the festival to talk about World Goa Day and the ghumott. He also
presented a ghumott with a painting and a cartoon summarising the
festival. Fr Santana Carvalho’s compèring added to the cheer of the event. The
largest ghumott in the world was unveiled along with the world’s largest
mandallam.
The ghumott was 48 inches in height
and 155 inches in circumference while the mandallam was 48 inches in
height and 63 inches in circumference. Both items were measured and noted in
the presence of Adv Sachin Sutar, Eric Pinto and artist-curator Victor Hugo
Gomes. Carlos Gonsalves was spearheading the ghumott movement along with
O’Luv and Arthur Fernandes. Premanad Satardekar was present at the festival
with his collection of musical instruments created from bamboo.
