The era pre 1961 in Goa was a time when Portuguese music
flourished in the state, a time when this music was celebrated from various
cultures as a part and parcel of daily life. After native Portuguese, Brazilian
music came a close second, with artistes like Roberto Carlos being favourites
amongst women that would swoon at the turning of the vinyl. Over time, a lull
set in and this musical interest waned. However, this week, through the Sufi
Sutra organised by banglanatak dot com, Brazilian act Projeto Saravá will offer
Goan audiences another look at a Brazilian folk music.
Projeto Saravá is a musical act that was formed in 2008 by
young musicians from the area of Minas Gerais/Brazil. They have come together
on common ground to present their insight into Brazilian music. Their work
features a host of original compositions as well as their interpretation of
popular musical genres. Most of their music comprises original productions that
are compositions of the group’s members.The group recently decided to undertake
the recording of its first official album, ‘Geraizero the Arraiá’ and is in the
fundraising stage for their production.

“We were brought here courtesy Embaixada Cultural, which is
a network of artists and cultural activists dedicated in cultural diplomacy,
creative economies and cultural development. When we heard of the Sufi Sutra
festival, we got in touch with the organisers and knew we had to participate in
it,” says group member, Paulo Rocha.
Projecto Saravá has, in time, taken inspiration from
Brazilian musicians at various stages where the music has been interpreted with
a contemporary twist. The band cut its teeth at Top Hat Bar, a venue where they
still make their presence felt every Saturday. The venue has been the happy
hunting ground of other popular Brazilian artistes such as Master Jonas Sergio
Pererê, Amanda Prates and the Barravento Band.
Consisting of members Gibran Muller, Marilene Rodrigues, Leo
Assuncao, Paulo Rocha, Francisco Cereno, Benjamin Abras, Juventino Dias, the
band will perform at Kala Academy on February 4 at 7:30pm.
