News reports about road accidents on the streets of Goa make for very
disturbing reading. What makes it even more tragic is the number of young
people either dying or losing their limb in these unfortunate mishaps. The
importance of safety cannot be discounted, whether on the road or during any
activity really. Hence it is very important to spread the message of safety. On
January 25, 2019, an exercise to do just that will be conducted. The Fire and
Security Association of India (FSAI) and the Arundhati Foundation are
organising Safety Quest 2019, a quiz competition on safety for all schools
across Goa. The quiz will be conducted at Menezes Braganza Hall, Panjim from
9am to 2pm and will cover aspects of safety including road, fire, electrical,
environmental safety, etc. This quiz will help students understand everyday
safety challenges in a meaningful, interesting and engaging manner so that the
children remember long after the quiz. The aim is to inspire children about the
science behind safety and the innovations in safety.
The quiz is open to students from standards 6-9. A team will
comprise two students from the same school. Each school can register a maximum
of three teams. All teams will go through a preliminary round at the venue.
Based on the scores, six teams will be chosen for the final round.

Prem Nadar, Secretary, FSAI – Goa Chapter, said that this quiz
competition is being held in Goa for the very first time and the response so
far has been encouraging. Prem added, “We reached out to all parts of Goa. The
number of registrations has touched 200. We have 100 teams from fifty schools.
Around fifty teachers will also be present.”
The
prizes on offer are quite interesting. The winning team will be awarded Rs 5000
and a Kindle each. There are cash prizes too for the teams that come in second
and third. All the teams will be transported to the venue and back to their
point of origin. To ensure the kids do not experience any discomfort, juices,
snacks and lunch will be provided.
