#Trashtag: Here is our progress report, dear readers

It started with a little thought of improving the garbage conditions in Goa. Then it became a hope for a better tomorrow, and from that, hope it became a movement that Herald and Drishti are currently involved in. Yes, the #Trashtag initiative has been working successfully, but not without some hurdles. You the readers are a source of our inspiration, but we ask you to do still more, like turn up for cleaning initiatives which you have initiated

You tell us where to clean, we do, but then its littered again

We began here…

Goa University: In order to inspire the
youth and tidy the campus before the arrival for the new academic year, on
Friday, June 7, 2019, the Goa University team, Herald, Drishti and a
Kolkata-based social enterprise banglanatak dot com working in Goa, got down to
work. 740 kgs of garbage was clear. Garbage has piled up at the campus again.

 Your zeal
inspired us, here are the fresh pictures sent by you, of garbage strewn in the
open

New
pictures have come in from the garbage sentinels. The pictures include places
like Betalbatlim Beach, Mandovi, Margao KTC, Mapusa, Caranzalem, Siolim and
Torda Badem. The pictures sent will be analysed, the place will be checked and
then the team will head out to clean.

All we ask of you is:

a) If you’ve sent a photo and identified the pace, please be
there when our team goes to clean

b) Spread the word in your locality that the Herald- Drishti
team is arriving and ask people to turn up, if not to lend a helping hand, then
to show support by their presence

c) Create awareness and guard against dumping garbage after the
cleanup operation as has been observed. Report immediately and take pictures of
those trying to litter the place again

 The most recent
cleanup…

Margao: In one of our most
recent Herald-Drishti clean-ups, the team marched to Margao bypass, Near Maruti
Mandir Davorlim, on June 17, 2019. The total weight of the garbage collected
was 360 kgs, that’s close to 40 bags of garbage collected on a
150-200-metre-stretch of road. There was a lot of garbage, but just few people.
Many locals and garbage sentinels were expected for the clean-up,
disappointingly, only a few turned up. Also, it was horrifying to see the garbage
again back on the roads.
