Tsunami of folk floods Goa, as the ‘safar’ continues

The three day folk festival Folk Sagar ended leaving audiences with memories of artists from Shantiniketan, from the deserts of Barmer and Jaisalmer as well as handicraft workshops and demonstrations

 Goa
explodes with music culture and creativity from all corners
of the land in an unforgettable three day extravaganza. It was organised by
Ministry of Culture, Govt of India, West Zone Cultural Centre, Udaipur and
Banglanatakdot com, the three day festival Folk Safar came to an end yesterday.

It
was held at 3 venues simultaneously – The International Centre Goa, Museum of
Goa, Sadhana Dell ‘Arte, audiences. The festival presented Langa music led by
Bacchu Khan Langa of Barmer desert, Manganiyar music led by Thane Khan
Manganiyar of Jaisalmer desert, Kalbelia song & dance led by Suva Devi
Kalbelia of Jodhpur desert, Baul music led by Rina Das Baul of Shantiniketan,
West Bengal.

At
the inauguration of the festival at ICG, Goa based India’s iconic music superstar
Remo Fernandez spoke on the importance of Roots music and sang a Konkani folk
song. Smt Kiran Soni Gupta, Director, West Zone Cultural Centre, Udaipur
detailed the Folk Safar festival & painting workshop in Goa to celebrate
Int’l Women’s Day. Both ICG and MOG presented fantastic performances of these
artists.

Sadhana Dell ‘Arte Merced a unique
space for culture an arts houses on a gorgeous home of Indo Portuguese
architecture, held Lecture Demonstrations on all 4 music/ dance forms, with
film screening, discussions and performances and the audience got deeply
engaged in the same.

The venue also held handicraft
workshops and demonstrations where patachitra artist (art form of Bengal) Jaba
Chitrakar led the team supported by Mahesh Jha of Madhubani, Ajit Das of
Basketry, Subhankar of Shola, Nazma in Kantha.

The curator of Folk Safar, banglanatak
dot com, has established its cultural presence in the music circuit in Goa
through their Sur Jahan festival and has been regularly presenting high
quality, non-ticketed world music festivals in Goa for over a decade.
