Piedade Youth Association was in an upbeat mood to celebrate a big milestone, its 40th Bonderam Festival in the pouring rain, after all it is the biggest monsoon festival of Goa. Under a carpet of colourful umbrellas, revellers donned raincoats and jackets to brave the weather and enjoy the annual harvest festival, Bonderam on Divar Island. Savio Monteiro, president of the Piedade Youth Association declared Bonderam open.
The Traditional Flag Festival of Divar Island organised by Piedade Youth Association began with the flag parade with 12 flags of different countries led by the Indian Flag. Next was the All Goa Fancy Dress Competition followed by the float parade by six wards, Premiero Ward, Romantic Ward, Maddant Stars Ward, Jingle Bells Ward, Vitozem Ward and Divar Centre Ward. Each ward introduced the theme of their float which commenced with the songs especially composed for the float. Vittozem presented ‘Koxtt Korun Vodd Zalem’, Jingle Bells presented ‘Dhoriantlem Nustem amche Bhoxer’, Divar Centre presented ‘Diwadkaranchem Nustekaram’, Romantic ward presented ‘Pausachea Tempar’, Premiero ward presented ‘Divaddeche Mennkar’ and Maddant Stars showcased ‘Bonder Thaun Bonderam’.
The first prize for the best float was awarded to Jingle Bells ward, second prize to Romantic ward and third prize was awarded to Vittozem ward. In the Junior category of the fancy dress competition, Angel D’Souza was awarded the first prize and Elijah Pereira was awarded the second prize. In the Senior category, Propercia Fernandes was awarded the first prize and Big John won the second place. The competitions were judged by Siddesh Ganekar, Kevin D’Mello, David Furtado and Lulu Fortes.
RJ Ayesha Barreto compered the entire evening off entertainment leading the revellers to the next part of the celebrations, the live music. O’Luv sang his heart out with various hits as the crowds swelled in the heavy rains followed by Goan band Black in White live on stage, and finally DJ Brainwash performed live with Legit Sherwyn.
