In the history of human civilisation, there have been major events that have changed the course of the human race. Some of these events led to the progress of humanity – events such as the Industrial Revolution, the Human Rights Movement, etc. During the last couple of centuries, we’ve witnessed a global change in how sections of humanity have perceived one another. At the same time, there have been some incidents that nobody would ever want to be repeated and there have been milestones that emboldened societies.
The last century witnessed the dreaded World Wars I and II almost engulfing the whole world towards destruction. It was also the time when countries achieved their liberation and independence, writing a new chapter and changing the future for hundreds of thousands of people on the globe. The 21st century is the century of rapid growth and modernisation of human civilisation with the advent and mass penetration of information technology.
Anybody in the world is capable of exploring the whole universe sitting in a corner of the globe and has the potential to make or break the future of humanity. However, the other paradigm has been the way technology has led to the destruction of human life. Now wars no longer need to be fought on the battlefields and nations can be destroyed if needed within minutes or the entire population can be starved to death.
No country has been left aloof to the nightmarish advancement of technology which has the potential to wipe out human civilisation without the intention to do so. It only needs one person who loses his/her head and to fulfill the egoistic prepositions of a community or group. The biggest cause of concern for humanity is the machoism of certain individuals in the world who seem to have shut their eyes and ears and do not want to see beyond the realms of personal or economic benefit of a few individuals and companies. The wars that are being fought against innocent individuals across the globe are a glaring example of how the advancement of human endeavours is being misused against their very own human beings.
Since October 7, last year, the globe has witnessed a bloody disaster in the Israel-occupied Palestinian territory of Gaza. Thousands have been dying ever since the settlement of Jews in the territory began as part of the solution by the British Empire. However, this solution has only led to more and more war-like situations in the last more than seven decades. The global leadership that initiated this settlement should now ensure that this settlement process ends without any more bloodshed. Thousands of women and children have died a bloody death, but the worst is to see thousands of children starving to death. During the holy months, of different religions, the faithful undertake fasting by abstaining food, water, etc, depending on the belief and faith one follows. However, the forced hunger on thousands of people needs to stop.
Humanity is much more beyond the satisfaction of the egos of a few global leaders. The progress of the human race lies in the development and co-existence of the different communities on the globe. As the world celebrates Easter, one hopes that the world is liberated from the disasters self-implored by human beings against their own brethren. Let this Easter be a hope for the millions of people across the globe of a new dawn towards being human.
As the Pope in his message to humanity during the Holy Week said, “May no one rob our hearts of the hope of rising anew. May we never tire of defending the dignity of every man, woman and child, without distinction of religion, ethnicity or nationality, beginning with the most vulnerable among us – women, the elderly, children and the poor.”
