The act of a 41-year-old farmer from Rajasthan to commit suicide during the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) rally in the presence of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is shocking to say the least. The farmer was obviously upset over the huge crop losses his family had suffered due to unseasonal rains in Rajasthan.
The manner in which Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal went ahead with his rally after the unfortunate incident only displays his crass insensitivity. The BJP and the Congress also showed themselves in poor light by indulging in a blame game and trying to extract political mileage out of the situation.
The incident has only made the politics over the Land Acquisition Bill take an ugly turn and it now looks increasingly hard for the government to pursue this controversial agenda. With stress levels among the farming community shooting up due to various factors our netas would do well to throw their weight firmly behind the distressed farmers and do something to ease their plight.
