BBC, Soros’ sorrow for Modi government
The chinks in the armour of the Narendra Modi government are beginning to show not only from the outside, but from the inside also. The BBC documentary which the UK government asserted that the BBC is an independent entity and the fact that the BJP government banned in India as well as George Soros’ contention on the democratic constitution of the government in India has dented the democratic credentials of the Modi government. It is said in the Bible `Revenge is mine said the Lord’ as also that `the first one will later be last’.

For fair minded Indians, is the Modi government democratic? Consider the muzzling of the press, which was never even the case during the Emergency in 1975, the demonetization which resulted in the deaths of 105 people in India, the Aadhaar subjugation which compromised the sensitive iris scan and the finger prints, which the Supreme Court had ruled that was optional, the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, which was done under duress. the GST regime that has burdened the people of India with high tax rates, the three farm laws that caused the deaths of hundreds of farmers, which the BJP government was forced to repeal, the way the issue of the demolition of the Babri masjid was conducted. All these and many other issues have pried open the skeletons in the Modi government.
If all the opposition parties join together, a new government of national unity can unseat the Modi government in the Centre.

More doctors required
The south Goa district hospital at Margao Goa looks good from outside but it is really hurting and sad to see that there is a shortage of doctors here. The nursing staff here should be taught to speak politely to patients.
We cannot say that the district hospital is free of cost because tax payers money is there to build it and the government must see that all goes on well here. There should be proper treatment, bed sheets should be changed and the proper beds should be given to the patient according to their sicknesses.
I would request our CM and health minister to look into this matter and increase the doctors in the hospital for the health and wellness of the people of Goa.

End the suicide spree
All stakeholders of the IITs and other higher educational institutes of excellence across India should wake up to the stark reality haunting the students after two IITians, one each from Madras and Bombay, ended their lives and one survived an attempt. Stress, of course, is the biggest cause of suicides there but other contentious issues cannot be swept under the carpet.
IIT-Madras has the dubious distinction of witnessing 14 suicides in the last ten years–highest among all the IITs. Wellness centres to thrash out mental issues affecting the students have not been setup or have taken off as expected in many centres. Psychological counselling, friendly and transparent faculty: student interaction and relaxation of rigid rules should go some way in alleviating minds.
As is known, men and women who gain entry into these higher centres of learning possess high intellect. It is, therefore, evident that they cannot intentionally end their lives without extreme provocations. Abuse is the greatest possible form of bias. By all accounts, caste and communal abuses apart, gender and economic humiliations too are known to be heaped on students of the IITs and other centres.
Biggest roadblock to solving the emotional issues is the stakeholders’ reluctance to admit that problems do exist in the IITs. Once that roadblock is overcome, things should slowly fall in place.

Tough time ahead for Uddhav’s party
This refers to news report “Big blow to Uddhav Thackeray” (Feb 18), following the EC’s decision to allot the party name ‘Shiv Sena’ and its symbol to Eknath Shinde-led faction, there is growing fear that the newly anointed faction will stake its claim to party’s assets and funds. The ECI stated it applied the principles of the “Test of party Constitution” and the “Test of Majority” while finalising the order without going into the merit of the case. This is for the first time that the Thackeray family has lost control of the party that was founded in 1966 by Bal Thackeray on the principles of justice for the sons of the soil. With the Shinde-led faction, this is a victory for BJP too. The ECI ruling will have an impact on Uddhav’s faction in the upcoming BMC polls. Getting early relief from the SC can save the party from further embarrassment.

Vasco town works
Recently the municipal council and the PWD has undertaken the works of roads and internal road works in the town. We should appreciate the work as KTC bus stand was in bad shape for last 4 yrs. The completion of road work inside the bus stand is a relief for commuters.
Action againts shops in market is welcome step as many failed to pay tax in time. Around nine shops were sealed. The underground electrification is need of the hour.
