Entrepreneurial Programme at PCCE
PANJIM: An enthusiastic group of students and faculty participated in the Bigg Leap Programme held at Padre Conceicao College of Engineering (PCCE) Verna, on February 13.
It’s a joint venture between the Entrepreneurship Cell, PCCE and Centre for Innovation and Business Acceleration (CIBA), Agnel Ashram, Verna, to encourage entrepreneurial activity amongst the youth. A three hour interactive session with five eminent speakers was conducted from 2 to 5 pm.
Dr Luis C Mesquita, Principal, PCCE, inaugurated the event while Rajula Gupta, business and career coach delivered the keynote speech. Mr Gupta presented the topic ‘Do you have it in you to be an entrepreneur’, outlining the skills and approach required of an aspiring entrepreneur.
Prajyot Mainker, CEO, SPM Software and Designers, gave a presentation on ‘Student Idea to Commercialization’. Ms Leticia Mendonca, an alumni of PCCE, Mechanical Engineering Department and now a head tech writer at Avaya Pvt Ltd, Pune, shared her experience on how her enterprise was not able to catch on the target market. Aaron Gracias, a third year computer engineering student of PCCE spoke on young entrepreneurs and the various incubators in Goa. D S Prashant, Manager, CIBA, launched the business idea competition and spoke on the facilities available at CIBA for entrepreneurs. The Business Model Canvas was explained by Amarsh Chaturvedi, Director, Transverse Technologies and winner of ISBA & Power of Ideas.
Associate Professor, Niyan Marchon and Asst Prof Alzira Xavier, both from the Training and Placement Cell, PCCE, successfully guided the students in conducting the event.
Vishwanath Bhat, final year information technology student and coordinator, Entrepreneurship Cell, PCCE, proposed the vote of thanks.
Decapitated male body found
VASCO: A decapitated male body was found lying between Dudhsagar and Carazal Railway station on Tuesday.
According to Vasco Railway Police station, the deceased is suspected to be between 25 and 35 years and the body has been preserved in Hospicio, Margao, for post-mortem and identification. PSI Sharif T Jaques is investigating the case.
UP native held for mobile phone theft
PORVORIM: Mapusa Police arrested a native of UP residing at Khorlim-Mapusa, on charges of stealing a mobile phone worth Rs 5,800.
According to Mapusa Police, Jugal Vazarkar from Socorro complained that the accused, Mohammad Shakil, stole a mobile phone from a hair cutting salon at Mapusa.
Mapusa Police arrested the accused and Head Constable S A Gaonkar is investigating the case.
Gold ring, earring stolen at Agarwada
PERNEM: A gold ring and earring were stolen from a house at Agarwada-Pernem. According to Pernem Police, Flainita Fernandes of Sawantwadi residing at Agarwada, complained that some person entered her house and stole a gold ring and a pair of earrings from a purse on Monday night. PSI Sushant Gawas is investigating the case.
Four held for theft bid at Alto-Porvorim
PORVORIM: Porvorim Police arrested four persons from Porvorim for allegedly attempting to commit theft in a house at Alto-Porvorim on Tuesday.
According to Porvorim Police, Oscar Mascarenhas from Alto-Porvorim complained that accused, Arjun Sahani (Bihar), Prashant Roito, Nobin Botroit and Krishna Roito, all from Odisha, entered his house by breaking open the bedroom grill and attempted to commit theft.
Police further informed that the accused were caught red-handed while committing the theft. All four accused have been arrested and PSI Vilesh Durbhatkar is investigating the case.
3 tourists saved at Dudhsagar, Anjuna
PANJIM: Three tourists were saved by lifeguards in separate incidents at Dudhsagar waterfall and Anjuna Beach.
According to reports, Mohan Mesthasik (21) from Chennai was swimming at Dudhsagar waterfall. After a while, he got cramps in his leg and being unable to swim, panicked. Lifeguards rushed to his aid and secured him.
At Anjuna Beach, five tourists were swimming in no-swim zone despite requests by lifeguards to move to a safe-swim zone. Suddenly, two tourists from Delhi got pulled by a rip current. Lifeguards rushed to their aid and brought them safely to shore.
CDC issue taken up two years ago: GSAI
MARGAO: The Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) has said that the Association had taken up the issue of Indian CDCs for seafarers with sailing experience with Union Shipping and Transport Minister G K Vasan two years ago.
Commenting on the issue with reference to an advertisement issued by the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI), stating that they are making all efforts to request the Government of India to issue Indian CDCs to seafarers with sailing experience, GSAI said the issue was taken up with various authorities, including Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar and had called on individuals, including Capt James Braganza, Engineer Octavio Rodrigues, Capt Kumar, MMD Vasco, Admiral John D’Silva, NRI Commissioner office for guidance to pursue the matter. GSAI Secretary Beny Da Costa said the Association is happy that NUSI has started to work for the welfare of the working seafarers. “NUSI should look into the affairs of retired seafarers Ex-Gratia issue which they said the union has forcefully taken up with the National Welfare Board of Seafarers”, he added.
Beny clarified that GSAI is neither against the government nor NUSI, reminding that it is only an Association of Goan seafarers and will always fight for their rights.
Woman complains of rape
MARGAO: Colva police have registered a case of rape, cheating and threatening on a complaint from a Russian lady against Sunil Kumar and Ankit Kumar, both residents of Green Acres, Kurtarkar Building, Colva.
An offence under section 376, 420, 506 (ii) read with 34 of IPC has been registered against both. The police have received a written complaint from the victim Russian lady, who was working for the accused.
She alleged that Sunil befriended her in the month of October 2012 and induced her to invest 5,500 Dollars on pretext of getting married to her. He also assured her that he would open a coffee shop for her.
The complainant has further stated that the accused had intercourse with her on many occasions. Further, the victim has stated that Ankit threatened her not to file a complaint with the police. Further investigation in the case is in progress and no arrests have been made so far.
Misappropriation case filed
MARGAO: A case of misappropriation of money to the tune of Rs 5.87 lakh has been registered against one Fredrick Borges, resident of Sidolim, Sancoale, under section 408 of IPC on a complaint by Dr Dean Menezes, Director of Cosme Matias Menezes Pvt Ltd, Margao.
Dr Menezes in his complaint has stated that Borges was working at their showroom selling electrical and electronic goods at Margao as salesman. He stated that during the period of March 2012 to November 2012 it was found that the accused had failed to hand over various amounts collected from dealers and customers to the manager of showroom.
Though a complaint was filed in December 2012 with the Margao police, it was agreed not to pursue the matter after the accused promised to pay the misappropriated amount to the firm.
The accused is learnt to have paid the amount in cheques, but the same were dishonoured after which a fresh complaint was lodged with the police seeking action against him. PSI Pravin Gawas of Margao police is investigating the case.
Police register offence of rape
MARGAO: A woman from Ponda has filed a complaint with the Colva police that one Saffi Ulle Saya Mulle, a resident of Dattaprasad building, Curti, Ponda, attempted to rape her in his car. She stated that the accused gave her a lift and instead of taking her to her destination in Margao took her to Colva where he forced himself on her. The Colva police have registered an offence under section 376 read with 511 of IPC against the accused. When contacted, the police at Colva were tight-lipped and would not disclose anything.
One booked for rash driving
MARGAO: Margao police registered an offence under section 279, 337 IPC and section 134 (a) Motor Vehicles Act against Todd Palmar Duddey, 50, hailing from USA and presently working at Macbrout Engineering Pvt Ltd, St Jose de Areal, Nessai. Duddley is alleged to have driven his car in a rash and negligent manner near Ravindra Bhavan, Fatorda, and dashed his vehicle to another car and two scooters. As a result, the rider and pillion riders of both scooters suffered injuries. Police gave the names of injured as Nancy Dourado, Socorinha Rodrigues, Sneha Hull and Reshmi Rawal who were given medical treatment at Hospicio Hospital, Margao. Duddley said to have fled from the spot.
