State funding of elections seem to be the panacea for all perceived evils of the day. First the multiple parties have to be reduced to a minimum .World over poll funding by the Govt. is a non-issue and non-starter. The instability and corruption are upper most on the minds of political pundits. Limit on election campaigns expenditure and restrictions seem to be ludicrous as how the political parties manipulate the restrictions with impunity. Sheshan stepped in with video recording, cataloging the expenditure in details and it sent shivers down their spine. The politicians tried to circumvent. The manifold increase in their emoluments, including pensions, freebies and tax exemptions was expected to curb their appetite to involve in corruption. The Tenth Schedule has loopholes to find a escape route as and when it suits the aspiring parties and candidates. Indirect inducements like posts/positions, and cash incentives have always tilted the scales of destabilisation. Costly gifts from TV, laptops, fridges, mixers, mobiles of all hues and colours are considered legitimate. So also promises of free rations, power, etc at state expenses could be included in inducements. Boot capturing, rigging, intimidation, threats, manipulations of EVM’s etc have in the past proved effective. The fear of losing seat, re-elections, have not dampened the spirit of electors to violate the law with impunity.
Anyone who defects for any reason whether singly or in a group, must be barred for a number of years from seeking re-elections on any other party label and cost of elections must also be recovered. The option of recall must also be explored Those failing to mandatory file election expenditure, income within time limit must be summarily disqualified
Selfish politicians and avaricious parties will always work on ways to beat the system to be entrenched in power and pelf. Another step could be education level, fixed number of terms and age limit. The law on criminality should be made more progressive and enforceable and should not be held hostage only to convictions. The idea of quick disposal of cases against legislators can ensure some hope by delayed justice serving negative purpose Indian politicians are more self serving than engrossed in public service. They are the new princes in independent India after dismantling the evil of kings and princes The shifting of loyalties for personal gains is making mockery of Democratic principles and taking voters for granted, as after being elected the voters are helpless and disillusioned as their voice does not count for another five years.
