Last 10 years, climate has been changed in Goa. We don’t have the same winters which we used to have before. The summers been so humid that within a few minutes you sweat and unexpected monsoon. It rains even in September and October and we get dry spells in June and July. This is mainly due to global warming everywhere in the world.
Nowadays importance is given to technology and development. In the name of development many roads are built by filling the agricultural land and low lying areas. In short, so called development is done without any planning. There is a huge amount of deforestation in the villages and in the cities raising of concrete jungles which affects our nature and environment. Few years back we had gutters on the soil and the water was flowing freely and used to dry naturally in the soil giving coolness around. Now, since this gutters are made of concrete water flows, cooling doesn’t remain in the soil.
Some of the rivers in Goa are already filled with mud and concrete. An example is river Sal in Khareband. Once upon a time this river was used for trade with small ships and people used to collect grocery items from here but if you see now it looks like a collection of dirty water with a foul smell. There is a plenty of construction around this river.
If you go to Margao market in the busy hour, the traffic is horrible. There is no proper management. Roads are not enough for vehicles. You will notice the two wheelers overtaking other vehicles from any side of the road. There is too much of noise around. Everyone is in a hurry on the Zebra crossing. Pedestrians are running to cross the road. You can feel too much of pollution around. Transport department want to expand the roads but at the same time government is not taking any steps to curb the sale of cars. I mean not more than one car to a person. All this leads to negative impact on our environment.
Now the time is come for all of us to save our environment or time will come when everything will change and we will be the creators for our own destruction.
