The US Embassy in India has issued a strong advisory to international students, cautioning that violating American laws can have serious consequences, including the revocation of a student visa and possible deportation.
In a statement shared on social media platform X on Wednesday, the embassy reiterated that staying in the United States on a visa is a privilege rather than a right. It warned that students who are arrested or found violating US laws risk having their visas cancelled and may also be barred from obtaining future US visas.

“Breaking US laws can have serious consequences for your student visa. If you are arrested or violate any laws, your visa may be revoked, you may be deported, and you could be ineligible for future US visas,” the embassy stated, urging students to strictly follow the rules and avoid jeopardising their travel and education plans.
The embassy has repeatedly emphasised this position in recent months. In a post dated June 19, it noted that visa screening continues even after a visa is granted and that authorities reserve the right to revoke visas if the law is broken.
Further tightening scrutiny, the US Embassy on June 23 advised applicants for F, M and J non-immigrant visas to make their social media profiles public. The move, it said, is part of the vetting process to verify applicants’ identity and determine their admissibility to the United States.
The advisory serves as a reminder to international students to remain compliant with US laws throughout their stay to avoid legal and immigration complications.
