ongress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi condemned an incident in the Supreme Court on Monday, where a lawyer attempted to attack Chief Justice of India BR Gavai by hurling a shoe.
“No words are adequate to condemn the attack on the Honourable Chief Justice of India in the Supreme Court itself. It is an assault not just on him but on our Constitution as well. Chief Justice Gavai has been very gracious, but the nation must stand united with a deep sense of anguish and outrage,” Sonia Gandhi said.

The 71-year-old lawyer, Rakesh Kishore, allegedly tried to throw a shoe at CJI Gavai during court proceedings but was stopped by security personnel. Following the incident, the Bar Council of India suspended him for breach of decorum.
During Monday’s proceedings, the lawyer approached the dais, removed his shoe, and attempted the attack. Security intervened immediately, preventing any harm. Officials stated that the lawyer, upset over CJI Gavai’s remarks during a Khajuraho temple hearing, had written in a newspaper, “Sanatan dharma ka apmaan nhi sahega Hindustan.”
The lawyer was questioned for three hours and released. The Supreme Court did not file charges, as per officials, following the CJI’s instruction to “just ignore” the incident and warn the lawyer. The Chief Justice urged all lawyers to continue with the day’s proceedings, saying, “These things do not affect me.”
