Former Attorney-General of India and senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi has strongly condemned the recent incident in the Supreme Court where a lawyer allegedly threw a shoe at Chief Justice of India BR Gavai. Rohatgi emphasized that “courts of law are not meant to propagate religious ideas.”
Describing the incident as “unfortunate,” Rohatgi noted that it involved a lawyer, rather than a disgruntled litigant, and suggested that the act may have been motivated by religious or political reasons.

“It seems to me that he is either a religious fanatic who has been carried away by some observation made by the Chief Justice in a case about a month ago, or he is using the court as a political or religious platform to propagate his views,” Rohatgi said.
According to Rohatgi, the lawyer, while exiting the court, reportedly made statements about Sanatan Dharma. “This so-called expression of religion is completely unacceptable in a court of law, whether it is by a lawyer or anyone else. Courts of law are not meant to propagate religious ideas,” he added.
The Supreme Court has yet to comment on security measures following the incident, which has sparked widespread debate about courtroom conduct and the boundaries of free expression in judicial spaces.
