India’s higher education sector is set to strengthen its international presence with the establishment of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore’s first overseas campus in Indonesia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the initiative during his visit to Indonesia, describing it as a significant step that will benefit students, professionals and strengthen educational cooperation across the ASEAN region.
The new campus will be established in the Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Malang. It will become IIM Bangalore’s first international campus, joining a growing list of premier Indian institutions expanding abroad. Recent initiatives include IIM Ahmedabad’s campus in Dubai, IIT Delhi’s campus in Abu Dhabi and IIT Madras’ campus in Zanzibar.

The expansion is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages India’s top educational institutions to establish a global footprint and promote academic collaboration worldwide.
Initially, the Indonesia campus will offer Executive Education programmes designed for senior professionals, business leaders and government officials. After the first two years, IIM Bangalore plans to introduce full-fledged degree programmes, subject to the successful rollout of the first phase.
The curriculum will focus on key areas shaping the future of global business, including artificial intelligence, digital transformation, global supply chains, climate and sustainability, and healthcare management. Students will also benefit from interactions with industry leaders, academics and global experts.
While the campus is expected to primarily serve Indonesian students, it will also welcome learners from across Southeast Asia. Participants will have opportunities to visit IIM Bangalore’s main campus through academic immersion programmes, further strengthening educational exchange.
The initiative reflects India’s broader ambition to emerge as a global education hub while deepening strategic, economic and academic partnerships with Indonesia and the wider Indo-Pacific region.
