Man Dies After Being Trapped in Hospital Lift in Kolkata; 5 Detained, Probe Underway

A tragic incident unfolded in Kolkata on Friday, where a man lost his life after being trapped inside an elevator at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital for over an hour.

According to police, officers from Kolkata Police detained five individuals for questioning in connection with the death of Arup Bandopadhyay. The action follows a complaint lodged by the victim’s father, Amal Bandopadhyay, at the Tala Police Station.

Based on the general diary filed by the family, an FIR has been registered under sections related to culpable homicide, and an investigation into possible negligence is currently underway.

Preliminary findings from the post-mortem examination revealed multiple severe injuries, including fractures to the ribs, arms, and legs, along with significant internal damage such as ruptures to the lungs, heart, and liver.

In a heartbreaking detail, Amal Bandopadhyay had reportedly visited the hospital earlier that day to check on his minor son, who is admitted to the trauma care unit, when the fatal incident involving his other son occurred.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the exact sequence of events and identify those responsible for the elevator malfunction.
