AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi took a swipe at Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over his recent remarks on the controversial Public Safety Act (PSA). Referring to Abdullah’s statement that the law could only be repealed once J&K regained statehood, Owaisi reminded him that the PSA was introduced by his grandfather, Sheikh Abdullah, in 1978.
Owaisi noted that several members of the Abdullah family had held the Chief Minister’s post over the decades, yet none repealed the law. “Farooq Abdullah, G. M. Shah, Mufti Sayeed, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Omar Abdullah, and Mehbooba Mufti have all been CMs of J&K. They could have easily repealed PSA and prevented untold suffering and human rights violations,” he said.
Calling the law one of the most misused in the region, the Hyderabad MP pointed out that over 20,000 people had been detained without fair trials since 1978. Concluding his criticism, Owaisi quoted poetically, “Sab kuch luta ke hosh mein aaye to kya kiya, din mein agar chiragh jalaye to kya kiya.”
