India has reaffirmed that its energy policies prioritize Indian consumers, responding to US President Donald Trump’s claim that PM Narendra Modi assured him India would stop buying oil from Russia.
“India is a significant importer of oil and gas. Our policies are guided by the objective of ensuring stable energy prices and secured supplies,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, according to NDTV. The statement emphasized that India’s sourcing strategy is diversified to meet market conditions, and ongoing discussions with the US aim to expand energy cooperation.

Trump had claimed, “He’s assured me there will be no oil purchases from Russia… it’s a little bit of a process, but the process is going to be over soon.” India, however, continues to buy Russian oil to secure the best deals for its citizens. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar noted Western double standards, asserting Europe’s problems should not dictate India’s energy policy.
The remarks drew criticism from the Opposition. Rahul Gandhi alleged Modi was “frightened of Trump,” while Union Minister Piyush Goyal described Congress as “rudderless and directionless.”
