“She was studying in a private medical college. Whose responsibility is it? How did she come out at 12.30 at night?” Banerjee said, while asserting that Bengal police were taking all necessary action. She added that private medical colleges must ensure the safety of students and control the “culture at night.”

The Chief Minister’s comments drew sharp political backlash, with BJP leaders accusing her of blaming the victim instead of ensuring women’s safety. “Shameless Mamata Banerjee is a blot on womanhood,” BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia posted on X, while Shehzad Poonawalla said Banerjee “blames the beti and defends the Balatkari.”
The survivor, a second-year MBBS student from Odisha, was allegedly raped by three men after being dragged to a secluded area late Friday night. Her father said he plans to take her back to Odisha, citing concerns about her safety.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi has condemned the incident and urged Banerjee to take strict action. Three accused have been arrested, while the survivor’s friend remains under investigation.
