Most people inside the den were from Maharashtra. Some managed to escape as the den was located in a forest area and the raiding team, headed by police inspector Datta Guru Sawant, consisted of only 8 personnel. Those arrested were booked under section 11(2) 9(a) of the GPG Act. They include: Atma Gaonkar, Ulhas Gaonkar, Gurudas Gaonkar (resident of Honda), Ramkrishna Gaonkar, Ramchandra Mahajik, (resident of Poriem), Siddhant Pirolkar, Anand Malik, Narayan Masurkar, Bhikaji Malik and Raya Gaonkar (resident of Harvalem). They were later granted bail. Morlem, Honda, and Valpoi are just few places in Sattari where gambling takes place unhindered. Gambling dens there are located in forest areas, away from the police’s reach.
10 arrested in raid on Morlem gambling den
PANJIM: Ten people were arrested after a team of Crime Branch officials raided a gambling den in Morlem, Sattari on Sunday morning. Cash worth Rs 2.21 lakh was also seized.
