PANJIM: A shocker awaited Food Safety Officers of the Directorate of Food & Drugs Administration who while on a regular drive found 11 sugarcane juice and ice cream carts using ice that was meant to store fish and not for human consumption.
“These stalls were operating under extreme un-hygienic conditions and the food prepared were exposed to insects and flies, the sugarcane juices cart vendors were using ice which was not meant for human consumption, but one used for storage of fish,” Director of FDA, Salim Veljee said in a statement to the Press.
“These handcarts were directed to stop their activities until they obtain necessary food licenses from the FDA,” Veljee said, adding that three bhel puri stalls who were operating without food licences were also were directed to stop their activities.
The raids were conducted by inspectors Nelson Fernandes and Abel Rodrigues on Saturday, at Margao, Colva, Utorda, Betalbatim and Benaulim. 11 sugarcane carts, two kulfi, four ice-cream and four bhel puri stalls which were found operating without any food licences / registration under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and the Rules / Regulation 2011.
