PORVORIM: Quick thinking by an 11-year-old schoolgirl foiled attempts by a stranger to kidnap her while she was proceeding home from a school in Bardez on Friday.

Speaking to Herald, a school teacher said the incident took place sometime after 1.30 pm, when the 11-yr-old child of Std VI was proceeding home. The schoolgirl normally walks along with her elder sister, but she was alone on Friday afternoon as her sister was participating in extra-curricular activities in the school.

As the schoolgirl was walking towards her home, which is about 1.5 kms from the school, an unknown person in a Maruti van stopped in front of her and offered to give her a lift to her house. When the child refused, the caught hold of her hand and tried to pull her into the van.

The terrified girl then happened to notice a woman standing at some distance and had the presence of mind to point towards the woman and claim that the woman was her mother.

The girl then broke free from the man’s grip and ran towards the woman, while the van was driven off from the site.

The child then reported the matter to her parents and later informed her school teacher the next day. School authorities advised the parents to report the matter to the police.

The teacher said a police team reportedly visited the school to enquire about the incident and later patrolled the area for some time.
