PANJIM: As many as 140 liquor outlets, including bars and restaurants at Pernem, have been found to be located within 500 mtrs of National and State highways as the Pernem taluka team becomes the first to complete its survey.
The remaining teams have assured the Core Committee to submit their respective reports by February 28.
As per the Supreme Court directions, no sale of liquor is permitted within 500 meters of national and State highways.
“Pernem team has completed the inspection and has found that around 140 structures fall within 500 mtrs of National and State highways. The team members are preparing a final report. The other taluka-level teams will submit their reports by February 28,” Excise Commissioner and head of the Core Committee Menino D’Souza said.
The committee met on Thursday as a part of its fortnightly meeting to prepare to implement the Supreme Court order banning liquor sale on highways.
The Directorate of Municipal Administration and the Directorate of Panchayats have said that by and large all hoarding, signages and advertisements indicating location of the liquor selling/serving structures have been removed. The committee is set to meet on March 8.
Around 1900 outlets have been tentatively identified in all talukas, except Mormugao and Ponda. D’Souza told Herald that process to issue show cause notices will be carried out only after going through the reports thoroughly.
