MAPUSA: Fifteen closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras are operational at various points in Mapusa to address the city’s growing safety and security concerns, since Monday.
Of these 14 cameras, seven were old and they have been repaired and made functional. The devices are directly connected to the Mapusa Police Station and will be monitored from there.
Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Rayan Brganza informed that the work of setting up the new CCTV cameras was executed by Extra Eye at a cost of around Rs 2.54 lakh.
“One camera each is installed at various spots opposite the taxi stand, entrance of Mapusa bus stand, near PWD office, Gandhi Circle, Hutatma Chowk and other places in the municipal market area. This will help to monitor the entire crime scenario in the town and also keep a tab on the robberies being carried out,” he said.
Mapusa Police Inspector Tushar Lotlikar said that the police are monitoring everything via these CCTV cameras. He said that he has assigned some officer to monitor these cameras. “‘No entry’ violations will be watched, as well as those indulging in other violations are being booked continuously and notices will be sent out,” he said.
“These cameras will help us in detecting cases and also in tracking the suspicious elements moving in the town. For anyone violating the laws, challans will be issued and posted directly. This will also help in the prevention of crimes,” he said.
During the Ganesh festival review meeting, the issue of non-functional CCTV camera was raised and also a demand was made to install additional cameras in the town for better surveillance. Before Chaturthi itself the seven old one were made functional by the MMC.
