VALPOI: Fifteen Marathi primary schools in Sattari are likely to shut their doors in a couple of days.
The two primary schools namely Sonus and Ovaliem in Honda Panchayat are expected to close as per the government decision. Parents have opposed the decision and have been very aggressive because these schools educate children from poor families.
Presently, 107 Marathi medium primary schools are operating in the taluka and have played a very important role in imparting education to the poor.
However, now with the growing attraction of English medium schools, attendance in Marathi medium schools has been dropping steadily. The two schools at Ovaliem and Sonus which are expected to shut have only four students.
The other schools which may be shut down also face a similar problem with the number of students dropping drastically. The schools have less than ten students.
