The teachers, appointed on regular basis, will teach English subject in government Konkani and Marathi medium primary schools.
Sources said the new appointees will be sent for basic teachers’ training in August for 21 days before starting to teach in different schools. “The posts were not filled when they were advertised two years ago and as such they lapsed. The government recently revived the posts to subsequently fill them up on an urgent basis. The new recruits are regular appointees,” an officer said.
The Goa government, in 2013 had witnessed a strike by 20 contractual English primary teachers demanding regularization of their service.
Then chief minister Manohar Parrikar had questioned the wisdom of the teachers saying they should first read their contract/appointment letters and had said that the government would release an advertisement for recruiting BEd qualified teachers to fill up the posts on a permanent basis.
Education department has also introduced special training sessions for existing primary schools teachers in an attempt to upgrade their teaching skills.
The first batch of 676 teachers of Konkani and Marathi medium government primary schools from Pernem, Bardez, Bicholim and Sattari talukas underwent a week-long workshop on different educational innovations and learning styles in May. Teachers from four other talukas will be sent for similar training during the Diwali vacation and the remaining during the next summer holidays.
