PONDA: ‘Engineering Watch School Summit 2013’ has awarded GVM’s SNJ Higher Secondary School as one of the 100 best schools of India for the year 2013.

The institutions were judged on the basis of various parameters, courses offered, academic and non-academic performances, etc, as per the survey conducted by the National Magazine Engineering Watch, states a press note.
GVM’s SNJ HSS Principal Anita Bandodkar received the award from External affairs Minister Salman Khurshid at the award ceremony in New Delhi on May 21.
Courses at Savoi Verem school
PANJIM: The Ramanata Crisna Pai Raikar Education Society’s Ramanata Crisna Pai Raikar School of Agriculture, Savoi Verem, Ponda will conduct higher secondary school courses under Vocational Educational Programme in agriculture and computer techniques and these courses are to start from June 11. The criteria for admission would be X pass. The intake per course would initially be 20 students per course and admission started after the declaration of SCC examination results. The students are requested to contact the management at Savoi, Verem for admission to both courses.
MFG invites scholarship applications
PANJIM: Mineral Foundation of Goa (MFG) invites applications for scholarship for academic year 2013-2014 from students for higher education. The applicant should be resident of village in the mining belt and should have pursued high school or higher secondary education in schools of Goa. The scholarship shall be awarded in ITI, Diploma courses from the institutes of Goa govt, Medicine, Dental, Homeopathy, Ayurved, Pharmacy, Nursing, Engineering (Degree), Architecture, Fine Arts, Home Science, BEd, Law, MBA and Masters degree courses from Goa University.
Those interested may collect application forms from any MFG office between 9:45 am and 5:15 pm and submit filled application form by September 30.
Land Survey office shifted
PANJIM: The office of the Superintendent of Survey and Land Records, South, Margao, and the office of the Inspector of Survey and Land Records, City Survey, Margao, has been shifted from its existing location at 3rd floor, Ossia Commercial Complex, Margao to new premises at Block no 213, 2nd floor, Matanhy Saldanha Administrative Complex, Margao.
The functioning of the aforesaid officers at new premises will commence from June 3. All concerned are requested to kindly take note of change of address.
Kala Gaurav Puraskar for Assiz
PANJIM: Assiz Lobo, an eminent and veteran musician who is also the chairman of Swarashri Cultural Institute was conferred the Kala Gaurav Puraskar by the government of Goa for his contribution in the field of Goan traditional music.
Lok Adalat on June 8 in Panjim
PANJIM: The Permanent and Continuous Lok Adalat is scheduled to be held in the Court hall of the District Judge 1 and Asst Sessions Judge at Panaji on June 8, from 10 am onwards to take up the cases of Claim Petitions arising out of Motor Accident, Civil and Criminal matters of Trial Court, etc, pending in the North Goa district, for settlement.
The concerned parties and advocates whose cases have been referred to the Lok Adalat are requested to attend the same.
Seminar on Portuguese language held
PANJIM: A one-day conference on the theme ‘Portuguese Language and Literature in Goa: Past, Present and Future’ was organized by Ismilda Research Consultancy in association with V M Salgaocar College of Law, Miramar on May 25.
Dr Remy Dias made a presentation on ‘Living Between Two Worlds; Phoren Portuguese language and Amchi Konkani,’ through an analysis of Goa’s favorite songs manddes.
Dr Jaime Rangel provided insights into Tipografia Rangel, that produced so many creative works in Portuguese language. Lourdes Bravo da Costa Rodrigues shared her experiences with the Portuguese language and provided insights into the then prevailing educational system.
Alexandre Moniz Barbosa, renowned writer presented a paper on modern post colonial literature in Portuguese.
‘Passion to a Pen’ highlighted Goa’s first woman editor Dona Leonora and Dr Sharon Bragança Sousa and Dr Max Loyola de Furtado brought out her role in Portuguese language journalism prior as well as post liberation.
Sheena Barnes provided details of Portuguese language journalism in Goa, through a case study of Díario De Goa (1953-1966). The paper brought to light the agony and ecstasy of publishing a paper with limited resources.
Frederick Noronha, writer and proponent of publishing in Goa today presented a paper on publishing Portuguese in today’s Goa: Case Studies of Some Recent Titles.
NCP snubs bill giving powers to CM
PANJIM: The Nationalist Congress Party has hit out at the Goa (right of citizens to time bound delivery of public services) Bill, calling it a joke, especially since provisions of the bill give powers to ministers to fine officials who delay and the lack of an independent commission to adjudicate disputes.
Addressing a press conference, NCP President Nilkanth Halarnkar said that in its present form the end result of the bill would not be of any use to the public.
“The Bill/Act doesn’t provide for second appeal and a revision by appointing an independent commission on the lines of the RTI Commission,” Halarnkar said.
His party spokesperson Trajano D’Mello too questioned the role of ministers and the chief minister, who, he said, would use it to blackmail bureaucrats especially since the power to fine or not rested in their hands. “The NCP demands that provision in the bill which empowers ministers and the CM to fine and adjudicate over fines, respectively for not clearing files in a time-bound period is a direct attempt to politicize the issue and as such this power should be entrusted to a neutral committee,” D’Mello said, citing provisions of the bill that allow for this.
Report on CCP market stalls by June 15
MARGAO: South Goa district Magistrate, N D Agrawal, who is probing into the City Corporation of Panjim (CCP) market stalls allotment, on Saturday said that he would submit his inquiry report to the government by June 15.
He told newsmen that the inquiry into the allotment of 1424 is complete and a draft report is already prepared by him, adding that the final report will be compiled and submitted to the government by June 15 after verifying certain documents.
“I was initially told to complete the inquiry by March 31, but the process got delayed since some of the records pertaining to the market were not readily available. This prompted the government to extend the time frame to May 31. I have already asked the government to give me extension by one month, but I will now submit the report by June 15”, he said.
He said the intervening Assembly Session and the laborious exercise to peruse the records and other documents consumed time. “Then there was the other problem wherein records from the CCP cannot be taken outside the office. I along with my staff had to personally go to the CCP to check the records and other documents”, he added.
Pune tourist dies in Colva
MARGAO: A tourist from Pune, Pratap Keshwai (62) died at the Colva beach on Saturday noon. Colva PI Uttam Raut Dessai informed that the deceased was rushed to the Hospicio hospital, where he was declared dead. “The deceased along with three other persons had ventured in the water when they were hit by the huge wave”, he said. The body has been preserved for post mortem examination.
Labourer falls to death
MARGAO: A young construction labourer from Bihar died on Friday evening in the city after he came crashing down from a building under construction.
Sources said that the labourer Bipin Kumar (21) had a fatal fall while working at the site. The police are investigating.
Personality development prog held
PONDA: About 35 medical and support staff from Marcaim, Shiroda and Ponda Public Health Centre underwent 21-day personality development programme organised by the Central Board for Workers Education of the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment.
The workshop was inaugurated by the Ponda Sub-District Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr M Mohandas.
“This is the first time that we have organised such a programme for government medical staff in the State,” said Garima Gupta, in-charge of regional directorate (Goa), Central Board for Workers Education.
“This programme aims to train medical workers in communication skills, team work, positive approach and so on and will include doctors, nurses, paramedics and housekeeping staff,” added Gupta.
GEET questions Panjim jetty expansion
PANJIM: The Managing Committee of Goa Environment and Ecology Trust (GEET) at its meeting held on Goa Statehood Day, resolved to fight the illegal and the anti people Panjim jetty expansion project, which has been carried out in utter secrecy without taking the people of Panjim into confidence. It is feared that the jetty once completed, would be used to bring in coal and coke and carry out gambling in offshore casinos. It is also feared that helicopters would be allowed for the gamblers at the proposed jetty.
GEET requests government to immediately come clean on this project, as the work is being carried out mostly at night, making loud noises, disturbing the residents. The Panjim police and the Goa State Pollution Control Board seem to ignore this menace and GEET would be forced to take action legally against all defaulting agencies if the jetty project is not explained and environment studies not explained by the government.
Speed Breakers notified at Parra
PANJIM: The District Magistrate, North Goa District hereby order the construction of hump-type speed breaker in the jurisdiction of Village Panchayat Parra in Bardez taluka. One near Mother Teresa at Muddawada, Saligao, on the road towards Saliswada; another near Michael Azavedo house at Silavado Parra, seven mts away from the ‘Y’ junction in front of house of Michael Azavedo and near Lincoin Alvaris house at Silva Vado, Parra, 4 mts away from the gate of Lincoin Alvaris house.
Training in bakery products
CALANGUTE: Parishioners of Calangute recently underwent training in bakery at Calangute Church premises.
Over 40 parishioners took part in the week-long training under the supervision of Peter Fernandes. The training was provided by St Alex Church Calangute Parish Priest Fr Cipriano Da Silva through Dalima bakery professionals.
The participants were given certificates by Calangute MLA Michael Lobo in the presence of Calangute Deputy Sarpanch Savio Gonsalves and Fr Da Silva.

PANJIM: A special gram sabha meeting of the village Panchayat Cortalim-Quelossim will be held on Sunday June 9 at 9.15 am in the hall of the Village Panchayat Cortalim-Quelossim.
The agenda for the meeting is approval of budget, approval of expenditure for the previous year, selection of work and beneficiaries, social audit by gram sabha and to place before the gram sabha the village development and market complex plans.All the gram sabha members are kindly requested to attend the said gram sabha.
