MARGAO: Jaeden Pereira, student from Benaulim and presently stranded in Ukraine has taken refuge in the bunker, and is presently safe, but danger is mounting on his head, besides hundreds of other students due to bombarding by the Russian military.
Speaking to media persons, Anita Gomes Pereira, mother of Jaeden said that her son is studying veterinary medicine in Sunni State University, Ukraine.
“Yes, we are in touch with him, and he is safe. He has taken refuge in the bunkers below the hostel. Now, the only problem is his evacuation”, she informed.
Anita further said that there are nearly 500 students studying in Sunni State University who are stranded in Ukraine along with Jayden, and all of them are waiting for the evacuation.
“As informed by Jayden there is direct bombing from the Russian military forces at the said area where the Jayden is stranded. Evacuation has become a major problem over there, as all students need to travel from east to west”, she stated.
She has received information from Jayden that many students who were residing in the west of Ukraine have already been evacuated, and the officials of the Union Government are in touch with the stranded students in Ukraine.
On the other hand South Goa district collector administration has identified nearly 12 families from the district of Goan students stranded in Ukraine, as on Tuesday Senior officers of the government visited them and assured full help and support in bringing their children back at the earliest.
As informed by Surendra Naik, Additional Collector South, all of them assured help in bringing their children back under Operation Ganga.
“Rupal Gosavi is about to land in New Delhi shortly”, he informed.
He further said that they have identified nearly 12 families and contacted them so far which are from Margao, Benaulim, Curtorim, Vasco and Ponda.
“Six from Salcete, three each from Mormugao and Ponda, which include 10 female and two male students’ ‘, said Additional collector.
It is pertinent that the intensifying of conflicts between the two neighbours Russia and Ukraine, has led many Indians to be stranded in this eastern European country. Many Goans including students who are pursuing higher studies in Ukraine are waiting for the evacuation. Requests are coming from all the quarters of society to ensure safe return on a war footing of all Goan students to India.
A total of 14 Goan students are currently stranded in Ukraine while three have safely returned.
The State NRI Commissioner Adv Narendra Sawaikar informed that as per the information, total 17 Goan students are studying in Ukraine.
“Of 17 students 3 have returned. Efforts are on for repatriation of the rest,” Sawaikar said
