PANJIM: Directorate of Transport on Thursday said that 320 road accidents took place and 6,978 challans were issued for traffic violations across the State in May.
As per the report compiled for the month, there were 320 road accidents of which 13 were fatal (North Goa – 5 and South Goa – 8), 16 grievous (North Goa – 6 and South Goa – 10), 86 minor (North Goa – 25 and South Goa – 61) and accidents without injuries 198 (North Goa – 118 and South Goa – 87).
The department said that the number of people who lost their lives in road accidents was 14 (North Goa – 5 and South Goa – 9). Nine riders and one pillion rider, two passengers and two pedestrians lost their lives in the road accidents.
“In all 37 people were grievously injured (North – 12 and South – 25) while 139 persons suffered minor injuries (North – 38, South – 101). The number of Challans issued by Transport authorities for the month of May was 6978,” the report compiled by Transport Department states.
Earlier Transport Director Nikhil Desai had said there has been a 15 percent drop in fatal accidents due to the various safety measures taken by the various departments. “The number of deaths has gone down and the final numbers will be out after the total compilation,” Desai said.
Speaking on the measures taken and to be taken he had said, “We have also decided to write to municipalities to ensure there are proper zebra crossings and proper footpath without encroachments. There is an action plan given my Ministry of Road Transport and had asked us to work with various departments to implement it. We have also reviewed the entire action plan and we shall be sending the report to Supreme Court committee on road safety.”
