CALANGUTE: Four British tourists had a close shave after they got caught in a rip current and were swept 50 metres away from the shore while swimming on Baga beach on Sunday.

According to an agency, a lifesaver, who spotted them struggling, plunged into the water and managed to get a hold on two of them, while with the current too strong to bring them ashore with a surfboard, another lifesaver too joined the rescue operation with a jet-ski and brought the duo to the shore. A third lifesaver used a rescue tube to save another British national from the group, while the fourth managed to swim to the shore.
In another incident at Calangute, a group of six Bengaluru tourists were swept 35 metres offshore while swimming. A lifesaver saved three individuals using a rescue tube, while another saved two victims with a jet-ski and the third using a rescue tube.
Three Pune residents were rescued at Calangute beach. One lifesaver brought two victims to the shore using a rescue board, while another pulled the third person to the shore. There were a number of other rescues across the State.
