CALANGUTE: Four labourers were injured when a large tree came crashing down on makeshift huts in Calangute following rains and gusty winds on Monday night.
Elsewhere, uprooted trees also caused damage to property along the Calangute coast and surrounding villages. Fire service teams were on their toes since Monday night and attended to as many as 35 calls.
At Agarwaddo-Calangute, a huge tree came crashing down on makeshift huts, injuring four migrant labourers residing in the huts. Locals rushed to their rescue and shifted them to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
In Candolim, a coconut tree came crashing down on a house, but there were no casualties in the incident.
A number of trees were also uprooted at Calangute, Candolim, Arpora and Parra, blocking the roads and disrupting power supply at night.
At some places, power supply was restored in the wee hours of morning and was restored to other affected areas only in the latter part of the day.
Meanwhile, Calangute legislator Michael Lobo has appealed to the people of his constituency to prune their trees to avoid damage to property during heavy rains and strong winds.
“I urge the people of Calangute constituency to trim their trees which are lying dangerously close to adjacent houses, to avoid possible damage during the rains and to cooperate with the electricity department personnel while they trim the branches. By doing this, we can help save a life and minimize damage to property in the event of a storm or a natural calamity,” said Lobo
