NEW DELHI: Over five lakh studying in the primary classes from class I to V in 1100 central schools in the country will have a five-day week from the next academic session. The new schedule is, however, applicable only to kids and not the teachers, nor will it apply to the higher classes as they continue with the six-day week.
The Board of Governors of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathana (KVS), headed by HRD Minister MM Pallam Raju accepted the recommendation to this effect by an expert committee to conform to the provision under the Right to Education (RTE) Act which provides for 200 days of schooling in primary classes and 220 days in the higher classes.
A decision on increasing the central school teachers’ working hours from 37 hours to 45 hours a week in tune with the RTE Act, however, did not find favour due to the resistance by the teachers’ association.
