In a deeply disturbing and shocking incident, a 50-year-old man has been arrested by the Colvale police for allegedly raping a 90-year-old woman at her residence in Tivim. The horrific crime, which has sent shockwaves through the close-knit Goan community, occurred over the night of Thursday and into the early hours of Friday morning.
According to police reports, the accused, who was familiar with the victim and her family, was aware that the elderly woman lived alone in a secluded house, with no neighboring homes nearby. Taking advantage of this vulnerability, he allegedly entered the house and committed the heinous act.
The crime came to light on Friday morning when the victim’s daughter arrived at the house around 10:30 a.m. to bring breakfast. Upon entering, she noticed the accused, whom she recognized, taking some fruit from the premises. Sensing something amiss, she questioned him, but he left before she could gather more details. Shortly after, the elderly woman confided in her daughter about the assault.
Devastated and determined to seek justice, the daughter immediately lodged a formal complaint with the Colvale police. Law enforcement authorities acted swiftly, launching a search for the suspect throughout Friday. The accused was eventually apprehended in Tivim in the early hours of Saturday.
Following his arrest, the suspect was produced before the Mapusa court, where he was remanded to four days in police custody for further interrogation. The investigation, led by Police Inspector Sanjit Kandolkar, is ongoing, with police examining all evidence and statements to ensure a thorough and just process.
This appalling incident has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of elderly individuals living alone in rural Goa. Community leaders and local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the police immediately. The case has also prompted calls for increased police patrolling and community support systems to protect vulnerable members of society.
