CANACONA: In an accident reported between three motor vehicles on a narrow bridge over NH66 at Barcem on Thursday morning left the traffic disrupted for an hour inconveniencing hundreds of commuters on either side of the bridge.
The five narrow Portuguese era bridges existing on the NH66 between Polem till Balli have been the cause of many fatal accidents in the past.
A loaded truck proceeding from Margao towards Canacona and an interstate luxury bus coming from the opposite direction misjudged the width of the bridge and dashed against each other when they reached in the middle of the bridge at around 8 am. A swift car which was tailgating the luxury bus also hit the rear portion of the bus.
All three vehicles suffered damages. However, there were no major injuries to any of the occupants of these vehicles, sources said.
The police and the public present at the accident site persuaded the bus driver to somehow start the vehicle. The driver managed to take the bus across since a crane was not available at that time. It took about an hour to clear all the hundreds of vehicles piled up on either side of the accident site.
Soiru Komarpant, a social activist and press photographer, called the SP South Goa from his cell phone and as a stop gap arrangement diverted all the traffic coming from Canacona through an internal village road passing through Agonda till the road was cleared for traffic.
