MARGAO: As many as 127 people died in the 121 fatal accidents that were registered in the 14 police stations of South Goa in 2017 while there were 269 other accidents registered in the district during the same period taking the total number of accidents to 390 and in 307 of these the vehicle involved was a two-wheeler.
Ninety of the fatal accidents involved a two wheeler and in most cases the rider succumbed to the injuries sustained in the accident.
Three persons including a teenager were killed in an accident that occurred at Curti bypass road on November 15, 2017 at around 9.45 pm, while a woman and her son lost their lives in an accident at noon on Anmod Ghat on December 5, 2017 when a Tata truck rammed into their Tata Indica car.
Another two relatives died on March 13, 2017 when they were travelling in an Audi car that met with an accident near the KTC bus stand at Ponda at around 10.30 am. Two persons were killed by an unknown vehicle on September 25, 2017 at IDC Verna at around 10:30 pm.
Incidentally, while 22 of the fatal accidents occurred in the night as many as 24 occurred in the afternoon between 12 noon and 3 pm and four occurred post midnight and before day break.
Of the 269 other accidents registered in South Goa, 217 cases involved a two wheeler while four were caused by unknown vehicles including two unknown two wheelers.
Significantly the other accidents occurred mostly in the afternoon or night while post midnight and before day break only 6 other accidents occurred. While 50 other accidents occurred in the night, 55 of them occurred during the afternoon between 12 noon and 3 pm.
