Circular says Konkani first, then Marathi and English

MARGAO: The government has issued a circular to all government departments, including semi-government bodies and corporations, to install signages in Konkani, Marathi and English.
If Chief Secretary B Vijayan is to be believed, the government might also bring in shops and establishments to display signages in Konkani and Marathi, besides English.
The Chief Secretary told Herald that he has already issued a circular to the government departments to install signages. “The signage should first name the department in Konkani, followed by Marathi and English,” he said, adding “this circular will come into effect immediately. All government departments, semi-government bodies, including municipal bodies and Corporations will come under the ambit of the circular.”
Incidentally, when the Chief Secretary was coming out of the Margao Municipal building, he said that even private buildings can be made to display names and the nature of business in Konkani, Marathi and English. “In Tamil Nadu, business houses display the names in the local language. The Shops and Establishment Act makes provision for displaying the names in the local language. We will explore the possibility of bringing shops and business establishments under the ambit. But that will be implemented in phase II after the government departments implement the circular,” he added.
