MARGAO: The South Goa Zilla Panchayat Wednesday resolved to oppose the proposed airport at Mopa, while demanding that the government retain Dabolim airport as Goa’s only civilian airport.
After the meeting, South Goa ZP Chairperson Nelly Rodrigues said the ZP adopted the resolution demanding scrapping of the proposed airport at Mopa. She said the Zilla Panchayat had in the past opposed the new airport at Mopa, saying that Dabolim is equidistant for the people of both North and South Goa districts.
The issue came up for discussion when it was raised by Poinguinim ZP member Daya Pagi. He lamented that the very same person who were opposed to Mopa during the previous Congress government are now trying to pursue the project.
Pagi demanded that the government should first acquire adequate land for parking at the Dabolim airport, adding that the government should first connect Polem and Pernem with a four-lane highway before even talking about Mopa. “Let the government prove its intention by making available parking land at the Dabolim airport,” he demanded.
