PANJIM: The Congress party in Goa Wednesday alleged that the number of thefts increased during the BJP’s national executive meeting in the capital last weekend when majority of Goa police force was deputed to guard their national leaders.
“The number of robberies and thefts has increased in the last four-five days when the BJP conclave was underway,” party spokesman Sudip Tamhankar told reporters at a press briefing. He went on to allege that the police get haftas (bribe) from the burglars to shield them.
Tamhankar demanded that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who also holds the Home portfolio should step down, taking moral responsibility for the increasing crime graph in Goa.
Backed by RTI reply, Tamhankar said that recovery by the police in robbery, cheating, chain snatching, extortion, assaults, banking frauds, internet frauds and dowry have been pitiable since government took over the reigns in the State.
“More than Rs 22 lakh was stolen in robbery cases and only little over Rs three lakh have been recovered. Similarly, about Rs 22 crore was stolen during this period and only a little over Rs 12 lakh has been recovered,” he said.
