PANJIM: The All India Catholic Union, is planning what they term as the world’s first laity synod to introspect on the role of the Church in social life in the country.
“The All India Catholic Union has been consistently following developments in the universal church, as also in India on issues of faith. A synod is essentially a “walking together”. The AICU sponsored synod will review the status of the laity in the country today, how well it has been able to avail of the empowerment from Vatican documents, its relationship with the church hierarchy and avenues of collaboration for the enrichment of faith,” John Dayal the immediate past president of the All India Catholic Union while addressing the press on the occasion of the release of the book “Concerned face of the Church written by Redemptorist priest Fr Desmond de Souza CSSR.
The book deals with issues concerning the social angle of the church and its commissions and omissions in this field.
“The AICU is deeply concerned, specially, at the lack of government action to control increasing intolerance and persecution of our community in states as varied as Orissa and Gujarat, Karnataka ( which is fast getting the notoriety for being the worst culprit), Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. In Orissa the victims of the 2008 orgy of anti-Christian arson, rape and murder in Kandhamal are still awaiting justice with not even one of the culprits of 100 murders so far convicted in the fast track courts. In Karnataka, incidents of persecution have become a daily affair with the state government looking on,” Dayal said.
Present on the occasion was Archbishop Emeritus Raul Gonsalves, retired judge Eurico da Silva and others.
