PANJIM: Konkani supporters on Tuesday gave the government an ultimatum of 30 days to appoint a fulltime president to the Goa Konkani Academy (GKA) failing which, the language supporters would protest.
Addressing the media, Rajdeep Naik said, “For the past 8-10 months there has not been a full time president at GKA and Prasad Lolyekar has been given additional charge. Why can’t the government appoint a president? Are there no people in Goa who can take charge of the academy? Since Madhav Borkar resigned there is no proper functioning of the academy and there is no committee.”
He added, “We give the government an ultimatum of 30 days to appoint a full time president at GKA, failing which language supporters will resort to protests. The people will actually come on the streets. If the government can’t get a suitable person, we are ready to give names.”
He said there has been no proper coordination and various programs that would otherwise take place have been either stopped or have been organised on a smaller scale.
Another Konkani supporter, Advocate Surel Tilve, said funds at the academy are not a problem but there is no proper utilisation. “It has been almost eight months that GKA is running without a fulltime president. The government should look into this matter within the next 30 days failing to which Konkani lovers will take to the streets,” Tilve said.
