MARGAO: San Jose de Areal Sarpanch Perris D’Costa was left disgruntled on Monday as the authorities refused to attend to his complaint against some unknown person dumping medical waste including infectious waste along the roadside and in fields in the village.
He said while proceeding on his way to the panchayat in the morning he saw some plastic bags containing medical waste dumped on the bridge across the canal. “I looked into the bags and found an empty blood sachet indicating blood transfusion”.
Further, he said when he contacted the Maina Curtorim police to conduct a panchanama; PI Gaude flatly refused and instead advised him to complain to the health authorities.
“The health authorities claimed that they have no authority to check such things. If the government authorities do not help us to deal with such menace what are we expected to do,” he asked revealing that more bags were subsequently found at different places including the fields in the village.
“In fact a bag had ‘infectious waste’ written on it and this could be hazardous to the people,” he said, lamenting that even though the police are supposed to act in these matters as per the solid waste management rules, the Maina Curtorim Police have refused to do so.
PI Gaude who has been promoted as DySP is awaiting his posting and was unavailable for his comments. However, SP South Arvind Gawas assured that the police will look into the matter and investigate the blood sachet to trace its source.
