Panic gripped Margao as parts of old, dilapidated buildings continue to collapse, raising serious concerns about public safety. In the latest incident, the balcony of the Antão building came crashing down onto the road early Saturday morning, May 24, 2025. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the collapse occurred around 6 a.m. when the street was deserted. Municipal workers promptly cleared the debris, while the electricity department disconnected dangling wires to prevent further hazards.
The incident followed another collapse on Friday at Pimpal Katta, where a portion of an adjoining building fell on three parked cars. A child inside one of the vehicles was miraculously rescued unharmed by Margao fire personnel. Nearby fruit vendors also had a narrow escape, as they had stepped away for lunch moments before the debris fell.
Residents are now calling on the government to step in urgently. They’ve demanded that unsafe structures be demolished before legal entanglements delay action, warning that continued inaction could lead to tragedy.
