Centre will fund Rs 72 crore, state Rs 18 crore

PANJIM: In a major relief to Panjim, Union Ministry for Urban Development has cleared Rs 90-crore solid waste management project at Bainguinim under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), Corporation of the City of Panjim Mayor Surendra Furtado said on Tuesday.
Hopefully, the excruciating garbage woes of the capital city are likely to be eased with this project. The matter which is currently in court has been pending for many years owing to opposition from Bainguinim locals and government’s reluctance. CCP has been repeatedly blaming the BJP-government for not expediting the project.
Addressing media persons, Furtado said that the project would be funded on 80:20 basis with the Centre-State share being Rs 72 crore and Rs 18 crore respectively. High Court has allowed construction of a retaining wall at the site for which Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) will shortly issue tenders.
Mayor said that the CCP’s DPR has been cleared by Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) during its 132nd meeting held on Tuesday. He said that CCP will ensure fair and competitive bidding in a transparent process through e-tendering.
Furtado said that the CCP will form a technical cell consisting of experts in geographical information system, town planning, social development, engineers etc., to ensure quick and efficient execution of the project.
Also, another Rs 32 crore would be sanctioned under JNNURM for cleaning the St Inez creek by this weekend. “Within nine months of being in power, I managed to get Rs 20 crore for e-governance, Rs 3.5 crore for heritage, Rs 90 crore for solid waste and now Rs 32 crore for St Inez creek, Furtado said. “If I remain in power for another two years, I
assure that Rs 2,500 crore would be brought for development of Panjim,”
he stated.
