Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wild Life Warden, Dr Shashi Kumar has said that Goa should strive to achieve a balance between forest and mining and called for implementation of the government of India’s policy of compensating with 2 per cent hectare forest for every one hectare of forest lost.
Speaking as a chief guest at the Annual Prize Distribution Function of the Ramcrisna Madeva Higher Secondary School, Margao, Dr Kumar further said that Goa has a forest cover of 34 per cent as compared to Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh which has a forest cover of 30 per cent, 20 per cent and 14 per cent respectively.
He advised the students to take active interest in ecology and said they should develop a habit of observing flora and fauna while going for trekking.
Kumar further said that students should be aware of the immense damage that global warming can do to our lives and added “we should endeavour to protect cultivable land from consequential disaster of global warming”.
President of Vidya Vikas Mandal, Ramnathji Kare, in his welcome address, said that Vidhya Vikas Mandal which has completed 40 years of its existence, lays stress on quality education, and that , students who have passed from the various institutions of V.V.M. have excelled in various fields in India and abroad.
Vinod Pawar, Principal of R.M.S.H.S. read out the annual report of the school activities, while Vinod Dhamasker Vice President of Student’s Council introduced the Chief Guest.
One of the senior teacher, G.M. Naik was felicitated at the hands of the Chief Guest.
Miss Seeta Paiguinkar was felicitated as an all-rounder student, while Miss Namrata Jain was felicitated as the most studious student of the year 2010-2011.
Master Ramkrishna Bhakta enchanted the audience with his innovative feet on harmonium. Jamuna Murthy and Maryanne compered the proceedings. General Secretary of Student’s Council Master Nayeem Jivani proposed the vote of thanks.
