BCB eyes coaching role for Mushfiqur Rahim after retirement, following Mahmudullah’s appointment

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is reportedly planning to involve some of its current and recently retired stars in coaching and development roles, with veteran wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim emerging as a leading candidate.

According to Cricbuzz, the BCB is keen to offer Mushfiqur a coaching role once he retires from all forms of cricket, provided he is interested. The move follows the board’s decision to appoint former Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah as the batting coach of the Bangladesh A team for its tour of Australia. Mahmudullah has also been named mentor of the Bangladesh Under-19 side.

BCB Game Development Committee chairman Faim Sinha said the board considers it its responsibility to utilise the vast experience of senior cricketers for the benefit of the next generation.

“Mahmudullah, Mushfiq and others who have represented Bangladesh for so many years possess invaluable experience. It is our responsibility to ensure that young cricketers benefit from their knowledge,” Faim said.

He added that the board would be eager to welcome Mushfiqur into the coaching setup if he expresses interest after retirement.

“If Mushfiq has an interest in coaching or wants to remain involved with cricket, we will definitely want him to contribute. With the experience he has gained during his long international career and his understanding of modern-day cricket, it would be our failure if we could not bring him into the system,” he said.

Currently, Mushfiqur only represents Bangladesh in Test cricket while continuing to play domestic matches.

Apart from expanding its coaching pool, the BCB is also introducing a three-member technical committee to monitor and evaluate the performance of local coaches. Mohammad Salahuddin, Mizanur Rahman Babul and Sohel Islam will oversee the evaluation process.

Faim also revealed that coaches will undergo workshops on implementing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), after which a structured performance assessment system will be introduced to improve coaching standards across Bangladesh cricket.
