PANJIM: Cleaning of beaches across the State’s coastline has commenced with Tourism Department taking charge of the exercise with effect from Friday through the assistance of the project cell of Goa Tourism Development Corporation.
Tourism Department said that from Friday 200 labourers have been pressed into beach cleaning work on important beaches. It is also aiming to deploy labourers on at other beaches in the coming days depending on availability.
In a statement, Goa Tourism welcomed the support from various contractors who have deployed staff for beach cleaning work in the wake of suspension of the task by Drishti Lifesaving.
For now, the department is focusing on collection of waste, and the second stage of segregation and disposal is also being worked out. The waste collected from the beaches is proposed to be segregated and thereafter sent to the waste treatment plant at Saligao.
“Our first target is to remove the accumulated waste,” explained a senior official from the GTDC project cell. The labourers engaged on the beaches will thereafter be guided on segregation. “This will take another day or two for the exercise to be synchronised and stabilised,” the official said.
Tourism Department further said that the entire beach cleaning exercise is now under control and has expressed confidence that once streamlined will work out smoothly and effectively until the beach cleaning tendering process is completed and a new agency is appointed.
