CALANGUTE: The Calangute panchayat and local MLA have decided not to allow any stalls or encroachments on the main road during the traditional market day on Saturday.
The panchayat on Saturday cleared the encroachments by migrants and other vendors selling goods along the roadside. The panchayat acted in this regard to keep the main road free from encroachments as the vendors were allegedly causing traffic jams during the weekend.
The Saturday traditional market sees local vendors selling fish, fruits, pottery products, Goan sweets in the space allocated to them in the Calangute market.
Since tourist season has commenced, Calangute sarpanch Shawn Martins said the encroachments on the main road were cleared as they were causing traffic jams.
“The Calangute MLA, the panchayat and other like-minded people have decided not to allow any stalls on the roads. For several years, several stalls have come up on the road hampering the movement of traffic and consumers visiting the Calangute Saturday market, which is famous in North Goa,” Shawn added.
