MARGAO: Although the recent issues surrounding beef supply have reportedly been resolved, beef traders are raising alarms over alleged extortion by a group they claim is deliberately targeting their trade, especially during the festive season.

According to traders, this group disrupts the supply chain during high-demand periods like Christmas and Eid, causing significant losses to the beef trade and associated businesses. The traders accuse the group of escalating extortion demands when business peaks, leaving them frustrated and demanding government intervention to safeguard their livelihoods.
The controversy flared just days before Christmas when a clash between two groups in Margao disrupted the beef trade, dealing a blow to businesses dependent on a steady supply. While the situation has improved, traders are wary of future disturbances.
Speaking to O Heraldo, Shabbir Bepari, Vice President of the All Goa Beef Traders Association, confirmed that beef supply from neighbouring States has stabilised, but he emphasised the recurring pattern of these disruptions. “What we have noticed is that this disturbance in the business is created only during the festive season, whether it is Christmas or Eid. These groups ensure that the extortion money they demand from beef traders is increased,” he said.
Bepari revealed that the extortion isn’t limited to beef traders but also affects those dealing in mutton and chicken entering the State. He added that the association has already approached the Chief Minister, urging a formal inquiry to allow legal businesses to function without harassment.
As of now, no further disruptions have been reported since December 25, with the market operating smoothly. However, traders remain on edge, pressing for stronger government measures to prevent further interference and protect their trade from
exploitation.
