MARGAO: With the government not taking cognizance of their demands, aggrieved beef traders has now knocked the doors of Salcete MLAs supporting the Manohar Parrikar dispensation to work out a solution to the slaughtering of animals at the Goa Meat Complex.
Meat traders are believed to have called on Fisheries Minister, Avertano Furtado, Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva Mickky Pacheco and conveyed their sentiment on the resumption of animal slaughter at the complex. They are also believed to have met Congress MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, Independent MLA Vijai Sardessai and others.

When contacted, Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado said since he is presently out of station, he has requested Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva to take a delegation of the meat traders to Chief Minister, with their grievances.
“Parrikar is returning to Goa on Tuesday and they will seek an appointment with him to resolve the issue”, Furtado said.
Treasurer of the Querashi meat traders Association of Goa, Sheikh Jabber Bepari said that the conditional order passed by the High Court last week has not helped to mitigate the hardships of the meat traders. “The High court has categorically said that no animal from outside the state of Goa shall be permitted to be slaughtered at the Goa Meat Complex. The order says that the competent authority shall ensure that the animal is from the state of Goa. This one condition will spell doom for our business since 95 per cent of our animal requirements was met from outside the state. There are hardly any animals available for slaughtering in Goa. This is a reality”, he said.
Bepari pointed out that if they cannot import animals for slaughtering in Goa as per the high court ban, the government should assume the responsibility of slaughtering the animals and supplying the meat requirements of the traders.
